Catching up...
So, in April and early May, when I hurt my wrist and elbow, I couldn't write much, and I had to do--OTHER THINGS. Things I couldn't type about because my wrist was hurt. For one thing, Melissa Marr and Jennifer Lynn Barnes were at MY Borders! And I do mean mine. It's the Borders in the town where I grew up and I worked at the mall across the street for eight years. There are a lot of Borders in this town, so I'm glad they hit that one.

Some adult UF authors were there too: Mark del Franco, Rachel Vincent and Jeaniene Frost, and I felt bad that I didn't get books for them to sign too because they were all nice. They did a pretty long panel--long enough that my ass ACHED in those lousy Borders chairs--and I was relieved to see a good turn-out. I know people DO read YA in Orlando, because a lot of the good stuff is always checked out of the library, but...I never see these elusive beings called "readers" out and about.

"I'm so glad some people in Orlando read," I said softly to Dade.
"We're from Tampa!" the woman standing next to me said. "We drove two hours to get here."

Well, so maybe they were ALL from Tampa for all I know. But they were, at least, there.

The whole gang:

Me and Melissa:

Me and Jen:

I didn't get to talk to anyone much, since there were a lot of people there, but I can say they were both very sweet and Melissa let me pick which court band I wanted. (Winter Court, if you're curious. I have such an affinity for, well, winter...)

The other thing I did was buy Dade and myself seasonal passes to Disney. I'm not sure why this never occurred to me the second I got my advance. I'm always complaining that there's nothing to do in Orlando. But there is one HUGE thing that people save for years to do, right in my backyard. Ish.

WDW is one of the places you love or hate. I happen to love it. There are, of course, childhood memories involved, and if smell is the sense of nostalgia, the smell of Disney rides hits me like a time machine. (If you've never ridden on one, they have this definite odor, sort of like brackish water, dust, and...magic.)

There is also plenty of kitsch. They're trying their best to ruin Epcot, but there's still glimpses of that fantastic early 80s vision of the future THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Plus, over in the Magic Kingdom, It's a Small World was originally created for the '64 World's Fair, and while you do have to put up with the song, where else can you pretend you're at the '64 World's Fair? (Well...so maybe this isn't a priority for you.)

So let me know if any of you come to Disney and want to say hi at the parks. Just not from June 6th-August 13th, the week of Christmas/New Years, or whenever the heck Spring Break is. Because I am cheap and bought tickets with blackout dates, but also because I think you have to be crazy to go to Disney then...

Oooh fun pictures. I've never seen Melissa smile with her teeth before--she has a lovely smile. And Jennifer is so pretty! And YAY I finally get to see you!

And I'll be at Disney from August 16-20! Want to try to meet up? It'll be me, Adam and Aidan!!

And DUH, I can't believe you forgot about WDW being the major thing to do. The good thing about it is that there is ALWAYS something new there, so even if you go every single day, you won't get bored. LUCKY!! :) Go often and tell me about it so I can live through you.

Anyway, I hope to see you sometime in August, OK? Wheee!

Yeah!! I'd love to meet you guys! I wasn't sure when in August you were coming, so that's great!

And it's so true..Disney is never boring...it's always changing and there are plenty of things I can do more than once anyway. ^_^ I think I always wrote Disney off as too expensive, plus when I was working I would have been less inclined to take a whole day to go there...but now, I NEED something to get me out of the house that isn't just...shopping.

Cute pics! ♥

(Winter Court, if you're curious. I have such an affinity for, well, winter...)

This is really kind of a tragic statement! *magicks you out of Florida*

Totally the court I would pick, too. :)

Well, it might be WHY I have an affinity for winter. But...I don't know. I know plenty of FL natives who hate winter. I DO need to be magicked out of here!

August 14th is probably a terrible day for you to go but I REALLY want to go... it just has to be on my birthday because I can't afford Disney!! keep it in mind! I was trying to think of a way I could go and not be alone. like make a friend that has my birthday, or convincing nitt to come to florida then...

I was actually mentioning that to Dade...our blackout days ENDS on your birthday...like, what a lucky coincidence if you needed someone to go with. It is a nasty day to go, BUT...hey. It's free. We even have free parking. So let me know if you need some accompaniment.

Also, I'll probably be dying to go that day after having been forbidden from the premises for the last 2 months...

That's great news, especially with free parking! at least it will be free so we don't have to stress about going for the whole day. yay, I'll ask for the day off work!

Yeah, we got Dade the upgraded ticket for the free parking. Otherwise I figured I'd never want to use the passes because I'd be all, ew, parking. yay! plus I'm getting the hang of where the best places to eat in Disney are. like, if you go to Epcot, the Land pavillion has a great Asian veggie plate for like $8 that's a ton of food.

I don't think you need to go to Disney to run into me somewhere... I'm sure I'll be doing at least a little more traveling when I have a book I can promote...and you might too! Although you are not exactly in my neck of the woods...

Visiting you too would definitely swing it for me...you wouldn't mind a family of four staying with you, right? ;) (j/k)

Well, if you can all share one fold-out couch, come on over! ;-)

Yeah, the plane tickets and Disney tickets would be the expensive part ANYWAY...

We should all just have a retreat sometime in the midwest somewhere maybe... I'd love to meet you, Sarah W., and Rose...I'm sure there's some other people who'd be good additions. And renting houses is so cheap! I'm doing a retreat in a few weeks with some other people and it's like $225 a person for a week. I'm taking the train and planning to cook most of the meals as a group effort so the whole thing should be really reasonable. I mean, goodness knows when we could plan this when some people have kids and some people don't have much money and etc...I've pretty much spent MY travel budget for the year...but...I can dream!

I think something like this is definitely do-able -- since I'm going to ALA in Chicago, my travel budget (such as it is) is also gone -- but there's always next year! :)

I just got back from Orlando! We were so busy at the parks though, I didn't even think to look up any writerly events.
