Phew.
I made it through the weekend, and the biggest shindig I've ever pulled off: Dade's surprise 35th birthday party.

The hardest part was keeping the secret. I tell Dade everything, and I was practically bursting with it, but I managed not to make a peep and he was very surprised. I made way too much food and cleaned the house in 5 hours, leaving me totally exhausted by the time the party actually began, but it was so worth it to surprise him with all his closest friends. Awesome.

Yesterday we went to Grandma and Grandpa's for his low-key birthday dinner, that was a nice break for ME. Grandma and Grandpa's house is so relaxing and obviously the food was good.

I've been on a Japanese study kick this week. I started trying to learn Japanese when I was 14 and just beginning my anime geekdom. Most anime geeks go through the "learn Japanese" phase at some point, but I was really serious about it back then. I guess it appeals to both my aesthetics and my fascination with language. Every couple years I pull out all my books again and spend a few weeks studying. It keeps me from forgetting it, and actually, I do build on what I know every time. I especially love studying the writing. It would be a huge pain if I actually NEEDED to learn it! But as a hobby I love kanji. Once you start to learn how many of them are actually little pictures relating to the word, it becomes like a game to figure them out.

Last night I helped Dade figure out what some of his Japanese books on modeling say, and I even impressed myself...!

Very cool -- I held a surprise b-day party for Chris too (five years ago, heh) -- but the only way I could pull it off was to call it a Christmas party which then turned out to be his birthday party. I just didn't think I could do it all by myself, and because he thought it was a Christmas party, he helped with the cooking and other prep ;)

So I'm impressed!

I made reeeeally easy food--a big pan of baked chicken, a meat loaf, and a pot of mashed potatoes. And some brownies. They were from scratch, but not hard. I didn't make any fancy vegetables since...these were Dade's picky friends. (Well, SOME of them are picky. And they didn't touch the meatloaf because it had CARROTS in it...)

Pretty impressive! I don't think I could pull off a surprise party like that. And I bet the food was great!

You love kanji?? My sister--who has a minor in Japanese I think, and who is married to a Japanese guy--probably still has nightmares about memorizing kanji. That was the hardest thing about the two times she lived over there--she couldn't read. But hey, you never know where life will take you, so if you feel the urge to study it, go for it! You might be really, really glad some day!

Yeah, like I said, I don't think it would be fun if I HAD to learn it. I do use it, even as is, both helping Dade translate his books, and at the Asian market, and other miscellaneous uses...it was even helpful with my first (small) job--I worked at a booth at a comic convention that sold anime CDs, and since I could read kana and some kanji, I could find the CD titles without always having to consult "the list".

Oh, I am with you on how exhausting it is to get ready for a party. You are a sweet girl to Dade. I bet he loved it!

Yes, I don't think he's ever thanked me so many times for anything! It was worth it, especially since his mom died a few years ago and I know birthdays make him sad. Sometimes it's nice to have a reminder of how many people love you, and I think the party accomplished that.

Wow! I am impressed about the surprise party! Tell him happy birthday! He and I are about the same age. I turn 35 this summer. It sounds so old, but I guess, it isn't anymore. ;)

I hope you have some fun rest in your clean house with your Japanese books.

Nah, 35 isn't old, or at least, that's why I love having older friends! It seems young when I know so many people that age. ^_^ I'm not really sure what I do think is old. I have friends in their 50s that I don't think of as old.
